Melodyne takes care of formant correction, which allows for extreme pitch shifting of more than an octave with no side effects. You can also change the phrasing of a note by adding or decreasing vibrato, making it possible to change the phrasing of a note. Phrasing can be altered further by changing the transition from one note to the next. Formant control allows a male voice to be changed to a female voice or even to change a trumpet into a trombone.

You can freely move individual notes up or down and even time stretch/shrink notes to completely alter a performance. This could be compared to the MIDI key editor of a program such as Cubase, but in Melodyne you edit AUDIO, not MIDI. As Melodyne is a real time program you can make these changes on the fly and hear the results immediately. Melodyne will even export the note positions as a MIDI part allowing you to print notation from programs such as Cubase.
