Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase - Album of the Year

boards of canada campfire headphase
My album of the year has to be Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase. The introduction of guitars on this album has added another dimension to their sound.

The subtle addition of these extra textures to their soundscape has added to, rather than taken away from their signature sound. If you are a fan of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album, you will probably notice the references to that album, particularly on the building intro of Dayvan Cowboy. Other highlights are Satellite Anthem Icarus and Oscar See Through Red Eye, which could possibly be their best track to date.

Anyway, don't take my word for it, if you're into chilled electronic music that gets better with every listen, then you can't go wrong with this album.

Access Virus TI Polar

access virus polar
The Access Virus TI Polar features include greatly increased polyphony, 2 new oscillator types, a per-patch programmable arpeggiator, 16x2 delay/reverb fx, embedded singles in multimode, and much more. The Virus TI Polar links to your computer with VIRUSControl, a companion software product that ports the hardware synth into a host sequencer for use as a sample-accurate VST/AU instrument, simultaneously offering 2-way audio and MIDI connectivity, control surface functionality, editor and librarian functions, and more.

Sound On Sound Magazine had this to say about the Virus TI "The Virus has always been a fine-sounding synth, and it's always been fun and intuitive to program. The TI takes this to the next level; the new engine, with its additional DSP resources, is fantastic, and the improvements to both the Virus' hardware user interface and the new software interface, in the form of Virus Control, make the TI a dream to program. The 'total integration' features have been well thought out, and, for the most part, well implemented — everything you could conceivably want to do with a Virus attached to your computer seems to be possible. The only missing piece is the 'still to come' Remote mode, but I don't think this is a serious omission.

I think I'm going to buy a TI Polar because, for me, it's the perfect desktop instrument. I can have it right next to my computer keyboard and mouse, it's the perfect master keyboard for generating MIDI data when an 88-note keyboard isn't required, and, of course, it has the best-sounding Virus synth engine to date. It's not particularly cheap, and the Polar costs the same as the 61-note Keyboard version, but it's such a great instrument that I can't really criticise the price, because you really do get what you pay for."

The First Totally Integrated Synthesizer

A scalable USB link connects the VIRUS to a Mac or PC for total integration of synth and studio. The VIRUSControl plug-in automatically detects and connects the synth, ensuring a hassle-free configuration every time.

From inside a host application, the plug-in enables the new VIRUS hardware to appear as a multichannel VST/AU soft-synth with up to 4 sub-mixes (or 2X stereo). Access' proprietary driver technology makes VIRUS TI the world's first hardware synthesizer with sample-accuracy timing and a delay-compensated audio/MIDI connection.

Seamless interconnectivity also provides a real benefit in the software sequencer environment. All multitimbral sounds and settings used for a project are stored within it with the plug-in, for snapshot total recall plus editor and librarian functions with no SysEx or 3rd-party software hassles.

The new VIRUS hardware is also well-equipped to capitalize on the power of Total Integration. With 24-bit 192KHz balanced analog, S/PDIF I/O and MIDI in and out ports, the new VIRUS is well-suited for use as the main audio and MIDI I/O center for your entire rig. These functions are especially practical for the laptop studio, offering an unmatched range of features and capabilities from one product.

Additionally, a new Remote Mode allows the VIRUS hardware to become a control surface for any MIDI-capable device or software, mapping each of the 33 knobs to a specific MIDI message. TI ships with a great selection of templates and includes 32-user memories for custom controller maps. It's a powerful addition that greatly increases the value of the synth's studio footprint.

The Legendary Sound of Access: Evolved

Of course, TI is still a VIRUS, with all the soul of its legendary predecessors, but for Total Integration, the power and performance of the synth engine have been taken to higher extremes, thanks to a freshly optimized core which delivers unprecedented performance. For starters, polyphony is more than doubled, to 80 voices under average conditions.

And the sound? Phenomenal! Alongside the award-winning VIRUS oscillator models, 2 completely new types have been added. First is the real Wavetable oscillator model. This unique algorithm can blend waves to create evolving motion or switch between them to create gritty lo-fi textures.

The Amazing HyperSaw model can generate up to 9x the number of saws without using 9x the required polyphony. In fact, its polyphony is comparable to that of a single voice saw oscillator. With 2 oscillators, each playing 9 main plus 9 subs (36 oscillators per key), you can still enable Unison mode and get impressive polyphonic results. In one test, we calculated over 2000 simultaneous saws! Now imagine all this through Access' award-winning filters, including MiniMoog cascade emulation; shaping raw, pulsating WaveTables; or insanely fat HyperSaws. With its upgraded features, the Virus has never done more or sounded better.

The Mod Matrix has also been expanded to 6 sources with 3 destinations each (18 routings total) for greater realtime control and patch programming freedom. The new Knob Quantize Mode syncs the effect of realtime or sequenced parameter changes to a preselected clock interval. Changes are updated on the selected pulse and held until the next, resulting in staggered parameter movements like those produced by a step sequencer.

New and existing Virus owners will love the addition of a programmable arpeggiator! Users can create and store their own rhythmic pattern in every patch.

Enhanced with new power and resources, Multi Mode now embeds 16 patches for self-contained sounds you can tweak and transform without overwriting your singles or affecting other Multi programs. Use it to build impressive layers, splits, or poly-arps for performance or recording. A mode for use with sequencers is also provided, emulating the classic Multi which loads sounds from within the single banks.

In either case, the complete sound engine is always available to each Multi part, including dedicated delay and separate reverb fx for all 16 sounds. In effect, the full VIRUS TI single modes is replicated 16 times!

Optimization from the Ground Up

Besides adding great convergence and synth engine features, Total Integration is built around a major hardware platform upgrade, sporting a complete redesign inside and out.

A large white graphic display shows multiple parameters at the same time which can be edited using 3 Soft Knobs. Keyboard models feature an illuminated logo on the I/O panel (it looks great, and even pulses in sync with the tempo for other musicians or the audience to enjoy).

Also added in the hardware, a Tap Tempo button helps live VIRUS musicians stay in sync with drummers and turntablists using a sophisticated algorithm based on Access' SyncXtreme technology.

How is it all possible?

Inside, a cutting edge Dual-DSP core delivers stellar performance with super-low latency. TI Polar also employs studio-grade converters with 192kHz/24-bit D/A. These are paired with +4dB balanced inputs and outputs and a switchable soft limiting algorithm, and accompanied by S/PDIF digital stereo output and input as well. The onboard USB port is compatible with USB 2 specifications and works with USB and Hi-Speed USB devices and peripherals. For easy access to all these new jacks, the entire I/O panel of the TI desktop model can be rotated 90 degrees so the interface is on the rear panel. The 4U Rack mounting kit is also included.

Last but certainly not least, the onboard memory has been drastically expanded: 512 RAM patches and 2048 (rewritable) ROM patches plus space for 16 self-contained Multi Mode programs described above. All these new numbers add up to one hell of a synthesizer.

Fine-tune Audio Samples
Logic Pro 7 incorporates a powerful sample editor, allowing precise editing of your audio data. Beyond simple operations such as cut, copy, and paste, an extensive suite of DSP tools is also available. These tools include time stretching, pitch shifting and formant correction. Within the sample editor, you can quantize your audio recordings, translate pitched monophonic audio recordings into notation or extract the rhythm of an audio drum loop for use as a quantization template on MIDI performances. Premiere and Audiosuite format plug-in compatibility provides additional processing possibilities.

Professional Mixing Capacity
The virtual mixer in Logic Pro 7 controls a maximum of 255 audio tracks, 128 audio instrument tracks and a nearly unlimited number of MIDI tracks. Each audio and audio instrument track can display and use up to 15 insert plug-ins and 8 effect bus sends. Logic Pro offers dozens of effect plug-ins and supports additional Audio Unit (AU) format plug-ins.

World-class MIDI Sequencing
MIDI processing provides control over external sound devices as well as software instruments and effects, such as internal instruments and plug-ins or Audio Unit plug-ins. Thanks to the native MIDI functions in Mac OS X Core Audio, you can also record MIDI keyboard performances in Logic Pro 7. The Mac OS X Audio MIDI Setup utility controls most MIDI tasks, such as adding new devices, routing and so on. All MIDI information automatically transfers to Logic Pro 7, providing you with immediate access to your MIDI devices. Additionally, the deep integration of OS-native MIDI with Logic Pro 7 provides reliable MIDI data transmission at minimal latencies, enhanceing the playability of software instruments and accelerating workflow.

Automate Every Parameter
The parameters of software instruments and effects, as well as those of the mixing desk, integrate into the comprehensive automation system, thereby allowing full, total-recall mixes. The mixer supports a range of hardware controllers, from simple home studio models to high-end professional control surfaces that are deeply integrated into the Logic system. Generic control surfaces can be easily customized in a convenient MIDI Learn dialog.

Elegant Notation
The Score editor perfectly transforms MIDI performances into notation — in real time — as you’re playing. Elaborate layout functions and professional notation printout functions allow you to quickly deliver anything from a lead sheet to a complete orchestral score. Logic Pro 7 supports automatic transposition of different instruments, as well as guitar tablature, drum notation and rapid entry of song lyrics or performance notes.

Ample Output Options

You can write your final mixes to disk using industry-standard formats such as SDII, WAV, AIFF, AAC and MP3, including ID 3 tags. Logic Pro 7 also supports 12 surround formats, making it ideal for those involved in the creation of film and TV soundtracks. You can even bounce your song to a stereo audio file and immediately burn it to CD or create a CD master.

Distributed Audio Processing
The conventional approach to increasing the processing power of native systems requires you to invest in costly, dedicated processors built onto expansion cards or into external hardware. Now, with Logic Pro 7, you can work with up to 128 stereo audio streams simply by using Macs over Ethernet. Logic distributed audio processing scales from single composition to full-blown audio post-production needs.

There’s no need to open your computer, as you don’t need to add an expansion card, and by it’s very nature, this feature provides immediate access to the latest processor technology. Simply add one or more Macintosh systems via Ethernet (or FireWire) connections to your Logic Pro 7 system. The result is an audio and music production system with processing power that was previously unimaginable for native-based systems.

Project Studio
Distributed audio processing delivers the perfect link between a PowerBook and a Power Mac G5 in project studios. While the PowerBook makes for a reliable production and recording partner on the road, the Power Mac G5 is the ideal studio workhorse. Making them work together seamlessly optimizes workflow and maximizes productivity.

Swapping projects between the mobile computer and the stationary system in the studio normally requires fairly involved file management procedures to ensure that you've loaded both systems with the same samples, instrument and plug-in settings and audio files. Working with different audio hardware also means allocating the new Audio I/O to the Audio tracks and Audio Instrument tracks.

Using distributed audio processing in your project studio allows all files to remain on the local storage media of the Master system — the hard drive of your PowerBook, for example. Starting work in the studio after collecting ideas while touring simply involves connecting your PowerBook to your studio’s Power Mac G5 via Ethernet. You can continue to work as per usual, but with a phenomenal boost in processing power.

Distributed Audio Processing enables you to make full use of external studios instantly, and use expensive studio time more effectively. You can install the simple Node application — if it isn’t already on the studio Macintosh — and connect a standard Ethernet cable to the studio’s computer in a few seconds. This allows you to make full use of the studio without leaving the setup you’re familiar with.

Networked Facility
In bigger studio facilities, distributed audio processing lets you flexibly serve any processing demands — whether for mixing, producing, post production or sound design — in a highly cost effective way. Logic Pro 7 eliminates the need to equip each studio with an array of computers or dedicated DSP hardware because you can pool the Node computers in a central spot in the studio complex. Access the required horsepower, whenever it is needed, from every computer connected to the network.

Distributed audio processing in Logic Pro 7 will benefit from future developments in network technology. The protocol is independent of the network hardware, thanks to the use of the standard TCP. Furthermore, maintenance is simplified. One Node replaces another without problems, so repairing a Node doesn’t mean that production has to stop. The Nodes can be centrally placed outside the actual studio rooms, creating room for additional equipment and reducing noise and heat levels inside the control room.
Organic Growth

Optimized for all current Apple Macintosh computers, Logic Pro 7 makes highly efficient use of the CPU processing power in both G4 and G5 single and dual processor systems. This allows more complex musical arrangements, featuring more software instruments and effects, than ever. The new distributed audio processing feature offers a plug-and-play solution that provides the ability to tap networked computers for even more DSP processing power. Using standard network technology makes it simple to set up a new installation, or add to an existing one. Should your demands grow, you can easily expand your network and benefit from the latest processor technology available.

Apple Loops -- add another voice to the mix
Stretch and pitch shift audio files in real time. Take advantage of a library of audio and software instrument loops. Compose a first draft in GarageBand, then refine your piece with professional software. Logic Pro 7 now supports the Apple Loops file format that lets you work more efficiently and provide a better workflow than conventional file formats.

Pro Loops
First introduced in Soundtrack and later in GarageBand, Apple Loops have quickly gained popularity, with the huge range of professional sound libraries available. The inclusion of Apple Loops support in Logic Pro 7 brings the file format to a professional audio and MIDI production application for the first time.

Loops Browsing
Logic Pro 7 offers the Loop Browser for convenient searching. Based on the GarageBand browser, the Loop Browser lets you find Apple Loops by instrument, genre or mood. Logic displays search results as a listing that lets you easily preview the sound. When you add Apple Loops to your arrangement, Logic automatically transposes them to the right key and stretches them to the song tempo.

Software Instrument Advantage
If you choose Apple Loops in software instrument format, Logic inserts the corresponding instrument, effect and input settings. This whole channel facility saves far more data than a standard audio file and makes the swapping of loops from one song to another or sharing ideas with other musicians simpler and faster. Of course you can edit settings in the channel strip.

Apple Loops Utility
The Apple Loops Utility allows you to create your own Apple Loops from a simple audio file. You can add data to specify the attributes of the file, which will make it easy to find in the Loop Browser. The Apple Loops Utility also allows the addition of tags that describe the rhythmic elements of the audio file. This is achieved through analysis and transient detection of the audio file, resulting in a set of markers. You can also manually add markers or move existing markers to new locations. These markers provide a reference for Logic Pro 7, allowing realtime stretching of audio data.

Sculpture -- imagine the sweetest sounds
Sculpture offers an inexhaustible variety of naturalistic sounds, based on component modeling technology, seamlessly integrated into the Logic Pro 7 software. It includes many sounds sought-after by composers, such as string, flute and pad sounds. Sharp percussive sounds, such as xylophones for example, are easily created. Given this broad scope for sound creation, Sculpture proves itself a worthwhile resource for unconventional sound design as well.

String Theory
Although other Logic Pro 7 instruments are partially based on component modeling technology as well, Sculpture provides a comprehensive model of a vibrating string or bar without the need for samples of a real instrument. As a result, its sounds retain the natural character and expressiveness of a real instrument, even if the sound's created virtually.

More Variables, More Variety
You can achieve further tweaks to the sound with two additional objects that can disturb the vibration. For these objects, the position and strength of the disturbance remain variable. In contrast to classical synthesizer parameters, changes in Sculpture result in sounds that have far more complex sonic details. A change to a single object parameter may result in a new timbre, dynamics and harmonics.

Familiar Interface
Beyond specific Component Modeling parameters, Sculpture offers the classic ADSR envelope of traditional analog synthesizers as well. This tool provides instant access to conventional parameters that most users know well. You can create the classic fine tuning of sounds with Sculpture’s 3 band EQ.

Sculpture's envelope editor
Another part of the modulation section offers two control envelopes for use as standard envelopes, where any envelope shape can be drawn. You can also assign external controller hardware to the envelope’s controllers allowing recording, playback and modification of incoming MIDI events interpreted as an envelope. You can even loop the envelopes you’ve recorded or drawn.

Morph pad
Used for over 20 morphable parameters, users find Morph Pad as the most powerful way of creating complex modulation effects. Users can find the values of these parameters indicated in orange on the user interface and assign five parameters to the Morph Pad at one time. Move the morph point in the Morph Pad and you change the values of multiple parameters simultaneously. Likewise, users can further modify or loop these movements.

Ultrabeat -- your 21st Century beatbox
Feature-rich drum synthesizer UltraBeat provides everything you need to create totally new beats or manipulate samples of natural sounds, making it the instrument of choice for all producers and remixers searching for an intuitive, flexible and sonically exciting way to create drum loops. A natural progression from the drum machines of the early eighties, sonically, this software instrument will become an indespensible tool whether you're working in Techno, House, Hip-Hop or derivative genres.

Analog And Then Some
UltraBeat’s step sequencer captures the feel of analog, with the same intuitive interface popularized in the early 80s. Ultrabeat expands on the concept by providing deep control of instrument parameters. Seamlessly integrated into Logic Pro 7, the step sequencer of Ultrabeat always syncs to the clock. UltraBeat offers 24 drum voices and one voice that you can play chromatically, making it ideal for bass lines. This approach ensures that UltraBeat loops always remain diverse, lively and interesting, so you —and your fans — will never become bored.

Enough To Go All Night
Beyond the sheer variety offered by the tone generation system, the sequencing facilities are outstanding for an electronic percussion instrument — whether software or hardware. Each sequence can hold up to 32 steps plus further information on trigger events and parameter changes. The swing parameter adjusts shuffle intensity. Accent increases the output volume of all drum voices for a particular step. The sequencer can save 24 patterns, comprised of the sequencer and tone generation data of all 25 voice modules, allowing you to record different loops in the same instrument.

UltraBeat's Filter and EQ modules
A rich palette of effects, filters and EQs lets you edit voices with extreme precision, from slight corrections of the tonal character to radical changes. The overdrive section features a distortion and bit crusher. Generally, these types of effects make the sound more aggressive and maximize the tension of the mix. UltraBeat’s overdrive provides the best results when processing percussive sounds. The multimode filter offers four different 12 or 24 dB cutoff modes, providing effective, full-bodied tweaking of lower frequencies. Modulation of filter parameters results in a stylish effect that makes the sound more lively. Ring modulation adds dissonances and overtones to the signals of both oscillators. Depending on settings, the effect is somewhat reminiscent of bell sounds, but it may add noisy characteristics as well. The refined two band parametric EQ precisely sculpts the sonic details of each drum sound.

Spread It Around
The Pan/Spread section positions each drum sound in the stereo field. The Stereo Spread option distributes the sound to the left or right channel, depending on frequency. Pan Modulation lets you vary the stereo position of the voice. You can link this modulation to one of UltraBeat’s multiple modulation sources. Both effects add sonic life and enhance the impression of the stereo mix.

New Effects -- your cutting-edge sonic palette
With the introduction of multiple new plug-ins, Logic Pro 7 once again validates its commitment to be the most comprehensive audio and music production software on the market. The new effect plug-ins bring together emulations of analog music equipment and the latest outcome of digital sound manipulation. The range of new plug-ins also feature valuable mastering tools that let you add the final polish to your productions without the need of acquiring additional Third Party plug-ins.

Guitar Amp Pro
The Guitar Amp Pro plug-in enables guitarists to play their instrument through faithful recreations of guitar amplifiers and speakers — directly in Logic Pro 7. You can connect a guitar to your Mac via a cable plugged directly into the audio input on the computer or via an additional USB-, FireWire- or PCI-based audio hardware interface.

Guitar Amp Pro offers a wide range of legendary guitar amplifier sounds and a variety of different speakers, which you can freely combined. Additional modulation effects — Vibrato and Tremolo — and a Reverb section further increase the flexibility of Guitar Amp Pro.

Whether you are touring or rehearsing, Guitar Amp Pro signifies the end of lugging heavy amplifiers around. Just take your iBook or PowerBook with you. Instantly switch between different amplifiers and speakers without patching cables. Build your ideal amp and speaker combos and save them as plug-in presets. Never before have Logic-based guitarists had this level of sonic excellence and ease of use right out of the box.

Many guitarists will also benefit from Guitar Amp Pro for re-amping duties. This method involves sending a sound through an amplifier and picking up the amplified signal with a microphone. Enjoy the tonal colors of Guitar Amp Pro re-amping, which makes it easy to virtually send a sound through an amp and pick up the resulting signal with a microphone. Guitar Amp Pro provides virtual re-amping with a mouse click.

As with all other Logic Pro 7 plug-ins, Guitar Amp Pro can be inserted in any Audio or Audio Instrument channel for sound processing. This makes it a worthwhile distortion effect not only for guitar, but also for any other type of sound.

Ringshifter
The Ringshifter is a powerful combination of two modulation effects especially popular in the 1970s — ring modulator and frequency shifter. At that time, the frequency shifter remained an expensive piece of hardware due to the complexity of its analog circuits. But now you can harness the frequency shifter’s special effects, ranging between spacious phasing to strange robotic timbres, right from your Mac.

The ring modulator mode of the Ringshifter plug-in modulates the amplitude of the source signal with a second signal or with an internal oscillator. This results in the addition of a metallic or clangorous character being added to the input audio signal.

Vocal Transformer
The Vocal Transformer allows you to manipulate vocal lines, percussive signals or any other monophonic material in a number of interesting ways. For example, you can change vocals to a robot-like voice or increase the pitch of a vocal track until it resembles a “Mickey Mouse” voice. The Vocal Transformer’s effect processes pitch change without disturbing the transients of the input signal.

Pitch Correction
The Pitch Correction plug-in corrects improper intonation of vocal recordings. It applies the desired pitch to a vocal track without losing the natural articulation of the performance. While this use of Pitch Correction is a valuable tool for precise vocal work, the plug-in can also be used for expressive effects: The use of large transposition intervals allows you to create interesting sonic artifacts that add to the voice signal, sometimes referred to as the “Cher effect”.

Linear Phase EQ
The Linear Phase EQ manipulates the EQ curves of your audio signal without corrupting its phase. The interface provides the same eight-band layout and method of operation as the popular Channel EQ. You can even copy settings between the two EQs. The Linear Phase EQ is specially tailored for mixdown and mastering situations and features integrated plug-in delay compensation.

Match EQ
The Match EQ acoustically matches two audio signals. In other words, this special EQ transfers the frequency spectrum from one signal to another. This way, you can acoustically match various songs for an album or impart the “sound” of any reference source to your own recordings.

Additionally, the Match EQ analyzes the signal of the track that it is inserted in and saves settings as a Match EQ template. You can change the sound of another Audio or Audio Instrument track by inserting the Match EQ and recalling the template.

Multimeter
A powerful analysis and measurement tool for audio material, the Multimeter houses three functions in one plug-in window. These precise visual instruments aid the process of enhancing the mix during the mastering stage of a project. The Third Octave Spectrum Analyzer is an industry-standard tool that analyzes 31 independent frequency bands. It complies with the specifications of the worldwide IEC 1260 standard. Two display modes show the effective signal average, providing a good representative overview of the perceived volume levels. The Goniometer visualizes the signal’s stereo phase. This helps in finding a balanced stereo image for the mix. The Correlation Meter gauges the phase relationship of a stereo signal at a glance. The Level Meter shows the current signal level on a logarithmic scale. Both the Correlation and Level Meter are available as separate plug-ins as well.

Workflow -- simply powerful
Logic Pro 7 makes it even easier to work with audio efficiently and productively. Incorporating the Apple professional software interface as well as requests from Logic users, Logic Pro 7 lets you create and edit tracks more easily, adjust channels directly and make global changes. What’s more, you’ll also be able to save such settings for use in future projects. Perfect for composing while travelling, you can use your Mac keyboard to drive software instruments.

Make Arrangements Quickly
Used to move and edit MIDI or audio regions in order to arrange your song, the main working window in Logic Pro 7 provides the best overview of a project. Now an integrated channel strip lets you directly access mixing parameters. You’ll also enjoy new editing modes that keep regions from overlapping and automatically crossfade between regions. Or try out the track solo, available for both MIDI and audio tracks and folders. Logic Pro 7 now lets you reverse multiple audio sample edits, so there’s no need to make backup audio files before editing.

Caps Lock Keyboard
Perfect for mobile musicians, the Caps Lock Keyboard feature takes advantage of your Mac keyboard so you can input note data — even velocity — without a MIDI keyboard. Simply pound out the melodies and chords with just your Mac.

Improved Project File Management
Managing all project-dependent files has never been so easy. You can easily consolidate all audio files, MIDI data, song files, plug-in and instrument settings, and movie data into a project folder. You can also create this folder at the start of a project, and let Logic copy or move media into the folder in the background as you work and import audio.

Templates
Templates take the Autoload concept to the next level for customizing your environment. Now you can also start a new Logic Pro 7 song by choosing one of multiple templates. Select from preset templates or create customized templates for each type of job that you perform or different studio environments with varying equipment (perfect for PowerBooks).

Audio Window
You can access the Finder menu directly from the Audio window, which lets you quickly locate audio files on any storage device. And with Audio Window Groups, you can bundle audio files, making handling easier and faster. For example, you could create groups for Vocals, Synths, Bass, or other genres to help you structure your audio files.

External Instruments
Use your external instruments as easily as internal instruments with the External Instruments I/O plug-in. It automatically monitors the correct audio inputs when a particular external MIDI device is selected. You can conveniently bounce audio file versions of tracks generated from external synthesizers.

Track Mixer Improvements
The Track Mixer now offers save and load functions that make it easy to transfer Channel Strip settings. You can select multiple objects, and edit them as a group, making routing faster than ever before. The rename tool also lets you edit to Mixer Object colors amongst other things.

Virtual Synthesis -- make waves
Logic Pro 7 software instruments offer pristine sound quality achieved through the use of 32-bit internal processing, which renders instruments with brilliant responsiveness. Logic sonically reflects the smallest nuances in your playing style. You can quickly add instruments and effects in the channel strip, then record and automate instrument parameters using real knobs and faders.

ES2
The ES2 combines the full-bodied warmth of subtractive synthesis with the unbelievable possibilities of digital tone generation systems such as vector synthesis and frequency modulation (FM). Musicians and sound designers can draw from a whole host of sounds and an exclusive range of synthesis techniques to create radical sounds or the most subtle of sound changes. The same level of flexibility also extends to the huge number of modulation options. The enormously feature rich ES2 is rounded out with an intelligent feature that allows the random generation of sounds, a unison-mode and the innovative ConstantBeatDetune function, which allows floating frequencies over the complete key range.

ES1
The ES1 software synthesizer has the heart of many classic analog favorites, and includes all of the details and facilities that fans of this type of sound generation know and love. It is rich with character, and elegantly combines 30 years of synthesizer history. Offering up to 16 voice polyphony, every ES1 voice features a main and sub-oscillator delivering the raw sonic material shaped by the analog ES1 filter. The ES1 lets you create earth-shaking basses, rich pads, textures, screaming leads, ultra-sharp percussion or exotic effects.

EFM1
Based on FM synthesis, the EFM1 lets you recreate the classic synthesizer sounds of the 1980s. Whether you desire expressive lead sounds, booming bass, soft strings or crystal-clear bells, the richness of FM synthesis delivers dreamy lushness. A simple interface provides accessible controls that make tweaking sounds a pleasure. Or let the EFM1 create its own sounds randomly.

ESM
The monophonic synthesizer ESM lets you design powerful basses and expressive lead sounds, with variable selection between sawtooth and rectangular waves. Despite of his inconspicious appearance, the ESM is able to sound like an old analog beast. So be sure to try out the resonance-capable dynamic low-pass filter, with a biting slope characterisic of 24 dB.

ESP
One of the strengths of the eight-voice polyphonic ESP are the brass sounds characteristic of 80s pop music. In addition to the oscillator, sub-oscillator and filter, the ESP offers an LFO for creating wah-wah effects and an ADSR envelope generator for precise level control.

ESE
You’ll love playing with the pad-sounds of the eight-voice polyphonic synthesizer ESE. You can mix its sawtooth or rectangular waves in a near-infinite variety of base tones, modulate the sawtooth wave in frequency and the rectangular wave in impulse width.

Vintage instruments -- evoke the funk
Logic Pro 7 vintage instruments offer painstakingly real simulations of the Hammond B3, various Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos and the Hohner Clavinet D6. All these instruments combine pristine sound quality with joyful playability, as a result of the excellence of its applied algorithms. And with rock-solid stability, you may rely upon the vintage instruments of Logic not only in the studio but on stage as well.

EVB3
One of the most influential keyboard instruments of the 20th century, the Hammond B3 organ's characteristic sound has been, and continues to be heard, in a wide range of musical styles such as Motown, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Funk, Reggae, Dance, Country, Blues, Soul and Gospel. For anyone working in a computer-based environment with a Logic system, this unmistakably warm sound is an essential. The EVB3 flawlessly recreates the sound of the B3 in software (and weighs much less than 500 pounds).

EVD6
The Hohner Clavinet D6 is one of the classic keyboard sounds of the 20th century. Although the D6 has always been closely linked to funk, the sound is used in countless pop, reggae and dance productions. The EVD6 mathematically recreates every subtle nuance of the original without using any samples.

EVP88
Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hohner — the sounds of these vintage electric pianos have been legendary for decades. The EVP88 precisely mimics these sweet sounds in every detail, reproduced authentically, without the use of samples. This modelling technique results in a software instrument that not only sounds great, but responds to every subtle playing nuance with incredible dynamism.

ESX24 -- sample freedom
The EXS24 software sampler lets you easily and quickly incorporate sample-based sounds into your productions with uncompromised sound quality. The EXS24 features sample accurate timing, total recall and intuitive control, as well as outstanding support for a wide range of sample library formats. And of course, you can process these sounds further using the built-in multi-mode filter and the extensive range of effect plug-ins on up to 16 individual outputs.

Create Complex Routes
The modulation matrix, borrowed from the ES2 synthesizer, provides comprehensive routing possibilities, for countless creative sound processing options. Try out the three LFOs, the two snappy envelopes, or any MIDI controller. Additionally, you can route the level of the sidechain input to sample select, sample start, pitch, glide, volume, pan, envelope times, parameters of LFOs, or filters.

Filter Out the Train Wrecks
An excellent-sounding multimode filter completes the feature set, providing adjustable slopes, variable filter overdrive amount, and a fatness circuit that ensures excellent low-frequency response, even at high resonance settings.

Add Hardware Processing
In addition, the Logic Pro ESB TDM lets you insert up to 32 instances into the Aux channels of the Logic TDM mixer. You can treat the stereo output signals of each EXS24 instance with any of the processing options of the TDM DSP environment, such as TDM plug-ins. Your Mac calculates each EXS24 TDM process and places no overhead on the TDM DSPs. Logic records the MIDI performances of each EXS24 TDM instance on TDM Auxiliary tracks controlled directly in Logic, which provides sample-accurate playback for all instances of the EXS24 TDM.

Delay effects -- beauty in repetition
One of the most classic effects developed in the audio industry, delay inspires creativity — not only in Dub, but in all genres of today’s pop music. Logic Pro 7 offers a faithful emulation of the tape echo for vintage fans but also boasts a most feature-rich Stereo Delay.

Tape Delay
Within Logic Pro 7, Tape Delay recognizes the tempo. Just click on the sync button and delay repeats will fit to the beat. The Groove slider offers smooth switching between triplet and dotted notes — this corresponds to the Logic Pro 7 Swing parameter. You can also modulate delay time with an LFO as well. Once you’ve experienced the sounds created by fading the feedback slider to create virtual tape loop saturation, or hear the desired frequency range more clearly with each repetition, you’ll know it’s time to get rid of your analog tape echo.

Stereo Delay
The Stereo Delay offers similar controller features to Tape Delay, minus the tape saturation, making it even more processor efficient. You can control the feedback level for each stereo channel separately, as well as the cross feedback level. Using Stereo Delay, you can effortlessly create enchanting rhythmic structures and haunting echoes.

Distortion effects -- more noise, less signal
Add some dirt to your productions with the distortion effects of Logic Pro 7. For guitarists, the Guitar Amp offers a combination of different amplifiers and microphones to model a guitar sound after personal conceivability. Compared with this, Logic’s other distortion effects likely tailor around the needs of the classical sound wizard, such as adding a sharp edge to a synthesizer sound or spicing up a drum-loop.

Guitar Amp Pro
Specially tailored for the electric guitarist, the Guitar Amp Pro effect provides a faithful recreation of eleven classic guitar amplifiers and fifteen different types of cabinets or speakers. Condenser and dynamic microphone models, an EQ, two classic modulation effects and a reverb provide further sonic manipulation. Connect your guitar directly to your Macintosh to enjoy versatile amplifier sounds or re-amp your recordings in Logic Pro 7 for additional signal overtones and new tonal colors.

Overdrive and Distortion
Two well-known effects, Overdrive and Distortion will come in handy by musicians of all genres. Move the Drive slider to increase transistor saturation. The Tone knob filters the harmonic-laden distortion signal, resulting in softer tonal characteristics. The difference between both effects is the softer overmodulation of field-effect transistors (overdrive) in contrast to the harder overmodulation of bipolar transistors (distortion).

BitCrusher
The rough character of low resolution digital signals can provide a desirable distortion effect, such as simulations of the legendary Fairlight CMI or even the 4-bit sound of the Commodore 64 for example. This effect adds a precisely measured amount of artificial aliasing to the signal, resulting in effects that resemble a slightly detuned short wave radio, right through to drastic distortion effects.

Clip Distortion
Specially designed for fans of the classic “tube sound” and who also like to experiment, the Clip Distortion plug-in offers extreme, non-linear distortion effects. Likewise, users will find the plug-in suitable for authentic recreations of warm tube amplifier sounds.

Phase Distortion
The Phase Distortion plug-in is based on a modulated delay line, much like the well-known chorus and flanger effects. As opposed to these, the delay time is not modulated by a low frequency oscillator (LFO), but by a low-pass-filtered version of the audio input signal itself — allowing the signal to modulate its own phase position.

Dynamics -- extend your dynamic range
Logic Pro 7 provides all the plug-ins to precisely control the dynamics of your audio. This incorporates tools that help maximize the perceived loudness of a song or help improve the quality of the signal. But why not “abuse” these plug-ins for some surprising trips into sound design.

Multipressor
A powerful mastering tool, Multipressor allows you to independently control compression on up to four frequency bands. The outstanding Lookahead function reacts to level peaks, even before they have been processed, enabling unmatched precision.

Compressor
The development of the Compressor has benefited from intensive analysis of the temporal controller reactions of leading analog compressors. Functions such as a Peak/RMS switch and ten-stage control for soft and hard knee characteristics provide precise control over the dynamic character. The practical AutoGain feature ensures that a normalized input signal results in a normalized output signal — regardless of the Threshold and Ratio levels.

Expander
The Expander is a genuine upward expander with a ratio range of 1:1 to 0.5:1. The dynamics of the signal are maximized above the freely-selectable threshold. The remainder of the parameter section is based on the Compressor, including the helpful AutoGain facility. Rarely used on a day-to-day basis, you may find this effect indispensable sometimes for refreshing the dynamic character of a signal.

Noise Gate
In addition to the standard Threshold, Attack and Release parameters, the Noise Gate offers access to Hold time and Hysteresis (the difference between open/closed Threshold) parameters, preventing the signal from fluttering. With filters available on the sidechain, you can even do voiceovers on underlying tom-tom tracks. The precision afforded by the Lookahead function puts an end to any “analog is better than digital” discussions.

Enveloper
One of the most unusual tools amongst the dynamic effects, Enveloper allows you to shape transients — the attack or release phase — of a sound. This offers possibilities such as adding or removing the “punch” of percussive signals, sending the drummer to the far end of a natural hall or erasing an echo in a recording. The enveloper makes it all possible.

Equalization -- cut the midrange, drop the bass
The EQs of Logic Pro 7 let you fine tune each sound and, therefore, produce a balanced mix that lets things fit together in an optimum way. Besides of the comfortable and precise editing in the graphical user interface, many studio professionals vaunt the efficiency and sound quality.

Channel EQ
Perfect equalization has never been so easy, intuitive, precise and efficient. The Channel EQ, the standard EQ in Logic Pro 7, seamlessly unites two tools in one plug-in. In addition, you can see a thumbnail view of the Channel EQ displayed in the upper corner of a channel strip.

The comprehensive FFT analyzer offers the ultimate overview when mixing. It provides a realtime visual map of the inserted signal, over the entire frequency spectrum, making any audible changes in the sound immediately visible.

The main strength of the Channel EQ, however, lies in it’s outstanding sound quality. Tight, heavy bass, clearly defined treble and tonal transparency will impress the most critical of listeners. In contrast to the Fat EQ, the frequency resolution and enhanced flexibility of the Channel EQ has markedly improved. The Channel EQ‘s eight bands allow for more precise EQ control, over the finest sonic details. The individual, fully parametric bands operate in the following ways: high pass filter, low shelving EQ, four peaking EQ‘s, high shelving EQ and low pass filter. This highly precise mixing tool has a darker side, too: the two resonant filters feature a maximum slope parameter of 48 dB, allowing you to make drastic sound changes, create radical effects and filter sweeps whenever you want some bite in your sound.

While using the Channel EQ, you’ll quickly realize that it places modest demands on CPU resources. It uses 30% less processing power than its predecessor, the Fat EQ. Seamlessly integrated into the Logic mixer and extensively supported by various professional controller surfaces, you’ll soon find that nothing less than the Channel EQ will do.

Linear Phase EQ
Housing the same eight-band layout as the Channel EQ, Logic Pro 7’s new Linear Phase EQ preserves the phase of the audio signal — even when applying drastic EQ curves. Far more CPU-intensive than the Channel EQ, you’ll discover Linear Phase EQ best suited to mixdown situations.

Match EQ
The Match EQ can copy and paste the frequency spectrum from one channel to another. It can also learn the frequency spectrum of a reference signal and apply it to another signal. This makes applying the sonic characteristics of one audio file to another easy, creating a consistent tonal color across files or songs.

Filter and vocoder -- acid bass to man-machine
Certainly some of Logic Pro 7’s wildest effects come in this category. They let you for example add an ethereal unreal appearance to a natural voice. But Filters also play an important role in tweaking vintage keyboard or classical analog synthesizer sounds. And could you imagine a modern dance music without some funky filters?

EVOC20
EVOC20 provides three powerful tools for sound design: A classic polyphonic vocoder with built-in synthesizer, a formant filter bank and a pitch tracking vocoder. Each plug-in provides maximum flexibility and features pristine 32-bit sound quality.

EVOC20 PS
Playable in realtime, EVOC20 PS combines a vocoder with a polyphonic synthesizer. Each of its 16 voices feature two oscillators that offer 50 special waveforms, FM capabilities and colored noise. This synthesis signal can be articulated by any input signal, resulting in classic vocoder sounds, such as talking robots, singing strings, percussive choirs and more. Up to 20 filter bands can be used for the articulation process. The Unvoiced/Voiced Detector increases speech audibility. You can adjust the sensitivity of the EVOC20 PS to changes in the analysis signal or capture the harmonic content of the analysis signal with the Freeze function. Formants can be spread, moved or modulated by the syncable LFO — for subtle or extreme sonic transformations — and further processed by the incorporated Ensemble effect, providing that familiar warm, swirling sound of vintage vocoders.

EVOC20 TO
Similar in architecture to that of the EVOC020 PS, the EVOC20 TO offers up to 20 filter bands, modulatable formants, controllable filter resonance for sharp or soft vocoder sounds, Freeze, adjustable reaction times and the U/V Detection circuit. The EVOC20 TO differs fundamentally from the polyphonic vocoder in its use of an audio track, or the monophonic pitch-tracking oscillator, for the synthesis signal. The pitch-tracking oscillator follows the pitch of the analysis signal with great accuracy. For interesting effects in conjunction with the input signal, you can switch the oscillator’s waveform between sawtooth and 2 oscillator FM and limit pitch tracking to any musical scale. Truly surprising sounds can result when you use polyphonic input signals or drums with the EVOC20 TO.

EVOC20 FB
Lovers of analog filter banks, prepare yourselves for this plug-in. The EVOC20 FB offers the core of every vocoder, with two distinct, fully adjustable filter banks (A/B). The input signal runs through both filter banks in parallel. Each provides up to 20 filter bands, which you can blend manually or via a syncable LFO. Each discrete filter band features independent level controls, with the option of frequency dampening by percentage, enabling precise and drastic sound sculpting. Additional filter resonance, adjustable filter slopes and distortion affords an expansive range of tonal colors. A second LFO, syncable to song tempo, facilitates the modulation of formants through the movement of filter bands. You can also achieve formant movements manually. As with the two vocoders, you can precisely tune the stereo spread, providing enhanced width to processed signals.

AutoFilter
The AutoFilter creates classic, analog-style hardware synthesizer effects. It features a selectable low pass filter slope (6, 12, 18 or 24dB), a complete ADSR and a powerful LFO, with speed modulation on the input signal. As higher resonance values cause the filter to cut the bottom end, signals tend to sound thinner. The Fatness parameter compensates for this audio artifact. The distortion effect on the input and output of the Autofilter will delight fans of aggressive sounds. The resonance controller invites you to experiment, as self-oscillation is initiated before you max out the parameter.

Modulation effects -- intensify the emanations
Liveliness — the quality artificial sounds frequently lack. The modulation effects of Logic Pro 7 provide a multitude of possibilities to constantly keep your sound in motion — from slight changing to radical deconstructing. This makes your music sonically more lively and intriguing.

Ringshifter
The Ringshifter adds the acoustic flavor of the seventies to your music — offering ring modulation or phase shifting in a stylish interface. The Ring Modulator modulates the incoming signal by adding a second signal from an oscillator or another audio signal from a side chain. The effect output signal equals the sum and difference of the frequency content of the two signals. Frequency Shifting alters the frequency relationships of the original harmonics. Both effects offer drastic sonic results, ranging from metallic artifacts through to robot voices or strange phasing effects. An envelope follower, LFO and delay further enhance the capabilities of the Ringshifter — making it a great tool for sonic experimentation.

Modulation Delay
One could call Modulation Delay “Hyper Flanger and SuperChorus,“ as it allows you to smoothly slide between both of these effects. In contrast to a simple chorus or flanger, two mixable LFOs modulate delay time or amplitude. The innovative Anti Pitch button ensures that the pitch of the modulated signal remains constant, and Constant Mod guarantees a constant modulation depth — regardless of the LFO frequencies. Phase relationships of the modulation are independently controllable on each channel.

Phaser
Unsurpassed, even by the most expensive analog devices, the sound of the Phaser can make audio artists teary-eyed. The concept of mixable LFOs, taken from the Modulation Delay, is extended by level-dependent frequency modulation of LFO 1. You can determine the modulation width and range by defining the limits of the modulation with highest (Sweep Ceiling) and lowest (Sweep Floor) values. Use the Stereo Phase knob to define the phase for the left and right channels. Then use the Color slider to add further intensity to the effect.

Tremolo
The Tremolo modulates the signal’s amplitude cyclically, producing repeated variations in volume, within a selected frequency range. Symmetry controls the relationship between the quietest and loudest phases. Smoothing influences the character of the volume change. In contrast to the Vibrato effect, Tremolo doesn‘t affect the pitch of the signal.

Ensemble
The Ensemble effect provides a rich, smooth chorus sound, which you might like to use on pads, guitars and other material. It generates up to eight additional voices, modulated by three separately adjustable generators. The modulation phase between the different voices is controllable, or random if desired, and you can change the stereo base, allowing the resulting output to match the needs of the mix.

Reverb Effects -- increase depth perception
One of the biggest challenges in the audio industry, creating a good sounding, natural appearing reverb doesn’t come easy. Although applying high-end reverb previously meant using weighty, expensive hardware, you’ll find the best reverb right in your Logic mixer. Describing it in a sober way, reverb means fitting a sound with spatial characteristics. But with the Logic reverbs, you crown them with a noble touch.

Space Designer
The real-time convolution process of Space Designer, Logic Pro 7’s high-end reverb plug-in, makes it possible to produce a reverb virtually indistinguishable from that of a real room or hall. Space Designer’s real-time calculation process merges the input signal with a reverberation sample — the impulse response (IR) — taken from any acoustic space such as a room, hall or cathedral. The result sounds as if the input signal had actually been recorded directly in the sampled room. The reverb can be further shaped via Space Designer’s comprehensive parameter set. Space Designer ships with a library of over 1,000 impulse responses. These include real rooms and halls, as well as legendary classic and contemporary reverb units. You can also record your own impulse responses.
Adjusting curves on a synthesized reverb

The ability to create and edit customized convolution reverbs sets Space Designer apart. In addition to sampled reverbs, Space Designer features a unique method for the creation of high-quality synthetic reverbs, through the use of specially designed envelopes. You’ll find the resulting reverbs dense and smooth, perfect for complementing your mix without needing to massively boost effect levels.

Regardless of whether you use IR samples or create your own synthetic reverbs, the sound can be quickly customized with Space Designer’s innovative volume, filter, and density envelopes. Model smooth envelope shapes onscreen with ease. You’ll also find the 6- or 12-dB low pass, band pass or high pass filters equally suited for fine-tuning your reverb sound or for creating experimental sound effects. As with all Logic Pro 7 plug-ins, Space Designer supports sample rates up to 192 kHz. The intuitive hands-on graphical user interface, the ability to create stunningly realistic reverbs using IR samples and the unique reverb synthesis facilities make Space Designer a highly professional tool perfect for any sound design or music production situation.

PlatinumVerb
Without massively taxing your CPU — a sure indicator of a brilliant algorithm — PlatinumVerb sonically matches other premium native reverb algorithms. Users find the sustain phase of the PlatinumVerb impressive, with a silky tone that you can normally only find in the best stand-alone devices. The true dual-band concept maximizes natural room characteristics during the release phase, and the comprehensive parameter set guarantees precise control when mixing.

Enverb
The Enverb plug-in provides convenient and precise control over the envelope of a diffused reverb, making customized reverb creation an extremely fast and easy process. You can create an impressive reversed reverb effect in real time or just a classic gated reverb through control of the original signal’s delay time. You can accurately control the basic tonal quality of the reverb cluster — featuring dual band technology — with a number of parameters.

Special effects and helper utilities -- tweaker paradise
In tweakers’ paradise, plug-ins provide a constant source of inspiration. Logic Pro 7 delivers impressive tools that invite you to start sonic explorations for outstanding sound design no matter whether you work on vocals, a bass line or other audio material. Besides this, Special and Helper Effects also provide precise tools for the jobs on the daily agenda of the professional audio and mastering engineer.

Vocal Transformer
Change a vocal track into bird chirps or a robot voice with the Vocal Transformer. This plug-in changes the pitch and/or formants of a vocal track, without affecting the other. The simple interface belies the sensational and extremely impressive sonic results possible with this plug-in.

Pitch Shifter
The Pitch Shifter detunes the signal in semitones and cents (1/100th of a semitone step). Three different algorithms (Drums, Speech, Vocals) are optimized for different source material. Selecting Drums leaves the groove of the original track intact. Tweakers find Vocals well-suited for any inherently harmonic or melodic signals. A mixture of both, you may find Speech useful for complex signals such as spoken word performances.

Spectral Gate
The Spectral Gate makes different parts of the signal separately audible in a user-definable frequency range, above (Super Energy) and under (Sub Energy) the Threshold level. This effect will surprise you with its unusual sonic results. One might describe isolated monitoring of the Super Energy signal as vocoder-like. You can add the original signal — outside the defined frequency band — to the mix. Low Level blends in the frequencies that lie below the frequency band and High Level blends the frequencies that lie above the defined frequency band. Creative sound explorers will uncover the Spectral Gate like a treasure trove.

SubBass
The SubBass plug-in increases the frequency spectrum of the signal with tones lower than the original sound. You can use the SubBass simply as a classic Octaver. As the bass signals generated by the SubBass are derived from two selectable frequency ranges in the original signal, it also makes the effect suitable for use on complex summed signals.

Denoiser
The Denoiser cleans up your recordings by separating the desired signal from the noise floor. No matter whether it is high blue or dark pink, you can dramatically reduce the noise level of any audio source, while retaining the highest possible dynamic level.

Exciter
The Exciter adds high frequency components to the input signal. The effect can be described as a non-linear distortion. In contrast to overdrive and distortion effects, the harmonics generator is fed by a high-pass-filtered version of the input signal.

Stereo Spread
Extremely useful, particularly when mastering, the Stereo Spread plug-in extends the stereo base by alternately distributing a selected number of frequency bands, from the middle frequency range to the left and right channels. Sound artists will find this plug-in suitable for adding a stereo effect to monaural recordings, without the usual alien artifacts associated with the process.

Multimeter
The Multimeter houses a 1/3 octave Analyzer, a Goniometer, Correlation Meter and a Level Meter. It provides precise visual feedback on various aspects of the audio signal, making it an invaluable tool for fine tuning and analysis of the sound.

(1) 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display compatible only with the 15-inch PowerBook G4.

Wireless
Bluetooth. Wi-Fi. Ethernet. Modem. When it comes to communication, the PowerBook G4 covers the bases, offering state-of-the-art solutions that include built-in Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, built-in AirPort Extreme, built-in Ethernet and a built-in modem. On every PowerBook.

54 Mbps Fast -- Built into all three PowerBook G4 models, AirPort Extreme delivers state-of-the-art wireless performance, thanks to the 802.11g standard. You never have to worry about compromised data rates -- AirPort Extreme gives you blazing connectivity speeds up to 54 megabits per second(1). This turbocharged technology lets you connect to the Internet without wires, additional phone lines or complicated networking hardware.

AirPort Extreme is perfect for wireless file sharing, web surfing and multiplayer gaming. You’ll see how fast this technology is when you use AirPort Extreme to network other computers in your home or office. In a video production studio, for instance, editors can transfer large digital video files between computers at astonishing speeds. And you can do it securely, with no disks or cable hook-ups required.

Wireless Internet Everywhere -- Use AirPort Extreme to get online wirelessly(2) at hundreds of coffee shops or book stores from coast to coast. What’s more, hundreds of hotels around the world have made Wi-Fi compliant 802.11b wireless local area networks (WLANs) available in their guest rooms. Because AirPort Extreme is 802.11b-compatible, you can use your PowerBook G4 to surf the Internet in all of them. And with companies creating even more locations to get online wirelessly, you can log on to the Internet from practically anywhere.

Create Your Own Network, Instantly -- With AirPort Extreme built in to your PowerBook, all you have to do is add an AirPort Extreme Base Station to network wirelessly from anywhere in your home, school or office. AirPort Extreme uses radio waves to communicate. Unlike infrared signals, which require an unobstructed line of sight between the remote unit and the base station, radio waves can pass through solid objects from up to 150 feet away. Which means you can take your PowerBook G4 into different rooms or onto different floors of a building -- and still maintain your active network connection.

Built-in Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR -- Three times faster than Bluetooth 1.x, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (EDR = enhanced data rate) is built into every PowerBook G4. This emerging wireless technology connects to Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, handhelds and other digital devices. Operating within a 30-foot range, your PowerBook can transfer data wirelessly with a rapidly growing list of Bluetooth-savvy peripherals. For example, you can use Bluetooth and iSync to synchronize contact information on your PowerBook, your mobile phone and your Palm OS-based handheld. Or use your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to take advantage of GPRS or 1xRTT connectivity, so you can check your email from just about anywhere -- even when an 802.11 hotspot isn’t available.

Gigabit Ethernet -- The PowerBook G4 was the first portable computer to feature built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet and is standard on the 15-inch model. Also known as Gigabit Ethernet, this connection provides high-speed network access at work or at home (if you use cable or DSL to access the Internet). The interface is auto-sensing, which means you plug in the Ethernet cable and it configures itself for the type of network you have -- 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps.

(1) AirPort Extreme uses the 802.11g wireless standard. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or Wi-Fi-certified 802.11b or 802.11g computer. Achieving data rates of 54 Mbps requires that all users have an AirPort Extreme- or Wi-Fi-certified 802.11g-enabled computer and connect to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. If a user of a Wi-Fi-certified 802.11b product joins the network, that user will get up to 11 Mbps, and AirPort Extreme and Wi-Fi-certified 802.11g users will get less than 54 Mbps. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors.

(2) Wireless Internet access requires AirPort Card or AirPort Extreme Card; AirPort Base Station, AirPort Extreme Base Station or other wireless access point; and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort and AirPort Extreme. Range may vary with site conditions.

SuperDrive
It’s called SuperDrive for good reason. No ordinary optical drive, the SuperDrive burns both CDs and DVDs -- and fast. With the SuperDrive standard on all PowerBooks, it’s speedy, easy and affordable to burn on the go!

Imagine What You Can Do -- Whether you’re pulling together a simple digital portfolio or producing a commercial-grade DVD title (or anything in between), the new PowerBook G4 is up to the task. The DVD format lets you add scads of bonus material -- like digital still photos, interviews, sound bites, theme music and in-depth background information -- to your movies and presentations, all with outstanding production values. Of course, this versatile drive can also read and burn music and data CDs -- not to mention playing DVD movies, making the PowerBook a very entertaining travel companion.

Double-Layer Drive -- The 8x SuperDrive built into every 15-inch PowerBook now supports writing to double-layer (DVD+R DL) discs. While single-layer DVD discs hold up to 4.7GB of data, double-layer discs have two layers -- almost doubling the storage capacity to 8.5GB.

Two Ways to Create -- Create your own DVDs from start to finish using innovative software from Apple: Get started with iDVD, included on every PowerBook G4, or step up to DVD Studio Pro (sold separately) to produce commercial-grade titles. Both applications come with QuickTime MPEG-encoding capabilities that have stunned the DVD publishing industry.

The Power of iDVD -- iDVD gives you a simple one-window interface for assembling your DVDs. Part of iLife ’05, iDVD accepts digital video directly from iMovie HD, audio files from iTunes and digital photos from iPhoto. Take advantage of animated drop zones and Apple-designed themes for instantly gorgeous DVDs, or use your own images for menus and backgrounds for that custom finish. iDVD sets MPEG-encoding parameters automatically to ensure the best quality, encodes projects to MPEG and (perhaps most important) starts writing the disc when you click Burn. And there’s an important additional benefit for pro users: with AppleScript and iDVD you can now automate the tedious chore of creating dailies or sending off an image sampler to a client.

DVD Studio Pro -- Want high-end, high-precision DVD authoring tools with push-it-to-the-limit functionality? With DVD Studio Pro, you’ll have the toolset to create everything from DVD dailies to slick interactive commercial titles. Advanced design tools, templates and transitions offer unparalleled creative freedom, while GPRM partitioning and sophisticated scripting enable you to produce highly interactive projects with cutting-edge navigation. And since DVD Studio Pro supports industry standards, you can rest assured that your DVD projects can really go places.

(1) 1GB = 1 billion bytes, actual formatted capacity less; song capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; JPEG photo capacity is based on 1.2MB (approx. 3 megapixels) per image; RAW photo capacity is based on 13MB per image; video capacity is based on standard MPEG-2 format.

Mobile Life
The PowerBook G4 is well loved for its sleek portable design and comprehensive feature set. Less well known are the special touches that make it a surprisingly accommodating companion at a conference, in a hotel or on a cross-country flight. Find out how to get the most from your PowerBook G4.

Swap Batteries Without Shutting Down -- Running low on power? Your 15-inch PowerBook is so accommodating, you can swap out batteries with minimal interruption. Put the PowerBook to sleep. Remove the current battery. Pop in the new battery. Wake up your PowerBook. You don’t even need to save your work.

Your Own Portable Network -- Ever notice that hotels tend to place Ethernet jacks in the least comfortable locations? But you don’t have to stand for it. Not when you can easily carry an AirPort Express Base Station with you when you travel. Just plug the base station into the power outlet and connect it to the Ethernet port using an Ethernet cable. Boot your PowerBook and turn on AirPort (if it’s not already on). You’ll be on the Internet in seconds with the freedom to work from anywhere in the room (and beyond, perhaps).

Work Longer Unplugged -- From the factory, the PowerBook is set to offer "Normal" energy savings when running off the battery. Want to work more hours untethered? It’s easy. Just select Better Battery Life from the Energy Saver preference pane to optimize your PowerBook for the best conservation of power. Of course, when you need to bump up your performance levels -- and battery life is a secondary concern -- you can always switch to Better Performance.

Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime? -- Don’t you hate paying those additional fees hotels charge for making phone calls? With PowerBook, you can avoid them -- and cell phone charges, too -- and still have lively conversations with colleagues in the office or the family back home. Using iChat AV, of course. It’s part of Tiger, so every new PowerBook has it. And since your PowerBook also has a built-in mic, you can simply select a buddy and speak your mind.

Transfer Data Quickly and Easily -- Using just a FireWire cable, you can quickly transfer data from another computer to your PowerBook. First turn the other computer off. Then, connect the two via FireWire. Turn the other computer on, holding down the "T" key until the FireWire icon appears. Open the hard drive of the other computer -- it should be on your desktop -- and copy away. When you’re done, select the hard drive and choose Eject from the File menu. Power the other computer down and disconnect the FireWire cables. Yes, Target Disk Mode works great with PowerBook.

Share Files Wirelessly -- Got info on your PDA you need desperately on your PowerBook? Or vice versa? Use built-in Bluetooth to effect the transfer quickly and wirelessly. Just pair the two devices using the handy Bluetooth menu icon. Then choose Send File from the Bluetooth menu, and select the file you’d like to send to your PDA. Got a file coming in? The PowerBook lets you choose the folder in which to place the file and the application with which to open it.

Open a Big Window on the World -- Want to see how easy it is to connect an external display to a PowerBook? Want to see that again? Seriously, with the PowerBook you just connect an external display and it works. First time, every time. You can even choose what you’ll see on the second display: the same image you see on the built-in display (that’s called video mirroring) or -- the default -- an extension of your Mac OS X desktop (called dual-display mode). Want to toggle between the two modes? Just use the F7 key. By the way, PowerBook offers five ways to connect an external display: DVI, ADC, VGA, S-video and composite.

Software
The PowerBook G4 comes loaded with software so easy to use, you’ll find yourself accomplishing things you had only dreamed of -- including burning professional-quality DVDs with iDVD or creating musical masterpieces with GarageBand -- right out of the box.

Start a Revolution on Your Laptop -- Every PowerBook G4 comes standard with Mac OS X Tiger, the world’s most advanced operating system. Instantly find what you’re looking for. Get information with a single click. Mac OS X Tiger delivers more than 200 new features which make it easier than ever to find, access and enjoy everything on your PowerBook.

Find Anything, Fast -- Tiger introduces Spotlight, the lightning-fast search technology that illuminates every corner of your Mac. Search everything on your system: Files, emails, contacts, images, movies, calendars and applications appear instantly. Spotlight results include all the metadata inside files -- the "what, when and who" of everything on your Mac -- including author, file size, type of content and many more details.

Get Info in a Dash -- The new Dashboard hosts nifty widgets that appear instantly and keep you up to date with timely information from the Internet. View stocks, check weather forecasts, track flights, convert currency and units of measure, even look up businesses in the phone book. Your favorite widgets appear with up-to-the-second information, then disappear just as easily, so you can get back to what you were doing.

Easy to Meet You -- Your colleagues (or your family) can be practically in the same room with you -- wherever you are. iChat AV brings multi-way video and audio conferencing directly to your PowerBook. And with such stunning, true-to-life conversational possibilities, it’s also a great alternative to costly hotel telephone calls.

Make a Connection -- Tiger makes your Mac a communications hub. Safari for Tiger features built-in RSS feed detection and display. Mail and Address Book incorporate Spotlight technology to help you stay organized. And iChat AV lets you conduct video or audio conferences -- or make free "phone calls" using VoIP. Add a .Mac account for iDisk storage, a mac.com email address, your own home page and powerful syncing capability.

Do It All -- From QuickTime 7 with the revolutionary H.264 video codec to the world-class performance architecture of Core Audio to the drag-and-drop workflows of Automator, Mac OS X Tiger offers a feature for every reason you use your PowerBook and then some.

iLife ’05. Organize Photos & Songs. Create Movies, DVDs & Music -- Let your imagination soar. The iLife ’05 suite of software applications lets you do fun, creative things with your pictures, music and movies in ways that PC users can only dream about. iLife ’05 also helps you share your joy with family and friends every which way, from email and the Internet to print and DVD. And you can do all these things and more quite nicely without thumbing through a manual. It’s all part of the iLife ’05 experience.

GarageBand 2 -- Record your next big hit. Since its introduction, GarageBand has made it easy for novice and experienced musicians alike to perform, record and create their own music. Without missing a beat, GarageBand 2 delivers an impressive encore performance, offering, for openers, multi-track recording. That means you can now play the guitar and sing while recording both tracks at the same time. Or invite the band over to back you and lay down up to eight audio tracks at once. Accomplish this feat using any audio input/output device compatible with Mac OS X. GarageBand 2 also provides built-in real-time music notation. And it includes smart recording features that let you enhance the tuning and timing of audio recordings (real instruments and vocals).

iPhoto 5 -- Make photos picture perfect. From stunning new softcover iPhoto Books (available in three sizes) to fully customizable slideshows, iPhoto 5 lets you do more with your photos. Import RAW photos or video clips and use them throughout the application. iPhoto also helps you keep every photo in its place with new hierarchical folders that store multiple albums, iPhoto books and separate slideshows. You’ll also enjoy more options for finding photos: a Calendar View for locating photos by day, week, month or year; and a lightning-fast search field. And the new Advanced Editing Dashboard lets you modify exposure, white balance, saturation, contrast and more. Even straighten those slightly off-kilter horizons.

iMovie HD -- Turn home video into home cinema. Are you ready for high-definition (HDV 720p and 1080i) 16:9 widescreen video? So is iMovie HD. iMovie HD lets you import and edit video from the newest camcorders -- not just HDV cameras, but tiny and affordable flash media video cams as well -- in the latest formats, including HDV, MPEG-4 and 16:9 widescreen SDV. iMovie HD moves faster through even the most complex projects, and new and improved tools let you edit quickly and easily. For example, you can now use the Timeline for all your editing, including rearranging clips. Then there’s the new Skywalker Sound audio effects and even more effects and transitions. Plus, you can now create movies automatically with the new Magic iMovie feature.

iDVD 5 -- Create stunning, Hollywood-style DVDs. When it comes time to share your musical, cinematic or photographic accomplishments with others, there’s no better way to do it than with a DVD. iDVD 5 makes it easy to create your own DVDs by importing movies, images and music via the built-in media browser or by dragging them from other iLife ’05 applications. Beautiful new themes now include gorgeous animated drop zones that move across the TV screen. In a hurry? With iDVD 5, you can create a OneStep DVD -- a one-click, camera- or videotape-to-DVD solution -- then burn that project onto a wider assortment of DVD media, including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW.

iTunes 6 -- The ultimate home for all your music. Regarded by many as the world’s best digital music jukebox, iTunes also boasts another claim to fame: The world’s number one music download store, it offers more than 2 million songs, 25,000 podcasts, 11,000 audiobooks and 2,000 music videos and select TV shows. iTunes not only manages your music, it also automatically syncs your music to the growing iPod family, including the impossibly small iPod nano. What’s more, iTunes lends its library to iPhoto, iMovie HD and iDVD whenever a song or playlist is needed. And it serves an important function for GarageBand, letting you export songs you create to your personal music library, where they can be burned to disc, added to playlists, transferred to iPod, shared via AirPort Express with AirTunes or used in other iLife projects.

Pro Tools 7 Software: Power to Create - Now Available

Pro Tools 7 software represents an evolutionary leap in the creative power of the industry-standard digital audio workstation. With a wealth of new features and enhancements, Pro Tools 7 software delivers significantly expanded recording and editing capabilities for audio and MIDI, greater mixing power and flexibility, enhanced efficiency, and improved ease of use. The result is a whole new set of tools that advances the art of audio production.

More Compositional Tools

Take advantage of new Instrument Tracks for improved integration with virtual instruments and MIDI sound modules. Work with REX and ACID files — two of the most popular formats for loops and samples. Group any combination of audio and MIDI regions together to quickly build arrangements. Use new region looping capabilities to assemble grooves or fill time between video cues. Apply groove input quantization to alter the feel of MIDI tracks as you record. With these and many more features, Pro Tools 7 software is what composers have been waiting for.

Tweaking Encouraged
Experiment more freely with MIDI tracks using new real-time MIDI processing capabilities. Capitalize on mirrored MIDI editing to automatically alter copies of MIDI regions throughout a session. Use the new Zoom Toggle button to quickly enter an editor view mode for easy editing of audio and MIDI. Choose the new Link Track and Edit Selection option to apply track-level commands across multiple tracks at the same time. In addition to these features, nearly every MIDI operation window includes enhancements, making it faster and easier to work with MIDI than ever before.

Greater Mixing Power and Flexibility
Enhanced support for multi-processor computers and improvements to the RTAS® environment in Pro Tools 7 software increase plug-in counts up to 150% on dual-processor computers. In many cases, you’ll be able to run more than twice as many RTAS plug-ins and virtual instruments on your sessions. (Click here for more information on RTAS performance improvements.) Additional software optimizations provide a faster, more responsive, and more powerful workstation. Plus, support for RTAS processing plug-ins on Aux Inputs and Master Faders (a new feature for Pro Tools|HD® systems) enhances compatibility between Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools LE™, and Pro Tools M-Powered™ systems.

Even Easier to Use

Even with all of its additions and improvements, Pro Tools 7 software is still one of the easiest audio applications to use. Menus have been streamlined and organized more logically, though key commands remain the same. A new Tool Tips feature provides descriptions of objects within the interface when the cursor is placed over them so you can get better acquainted with the interface.

Unique Hardware Options
Pro Tools 7 software supports a full array of hardware interfaces and peripherals, so you can use the hardware option that best suits your needs. Pro Tools HD 7 software works with Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools|HD Accel systems; Pro Tools LE 7 software supports Mbox®, Mbox 2, Digi 002®, and Digi 002 Rack™ systems; and Pro Tools M-Powered 7 software supports a wide range of M-Audio® peripherals, including:

Upgrade Your Power to Create

Pro Tools 7 software is a cross-platform release (Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.4) for Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools LE, and Pro Tools M-Powered systems. Standard Upgrades to Pro Tools HD 7, Pro Tools LE 7, and Pro Tools M-Powered 7 software are available now.

Sound on Sound had this to say about the new Pro Tools 7 software - "Pro Tools 7 is a pretty impressive piece of software, and it's an interesting update in that although there are many great new features, it doesn't feel like there's a single really dramatic, life-changing feature. But I don't mean this as a criticism because, instead, it seems Digidesign have just focussed on making the application simply better — every new feature, whether big or small, leaves you thinking 'Oh great, that's really going to help me.' And while the menu structure has changed, it's going to be fairly easy for existing Pro Tools users to adjust: despite the new features, PT7 actually feels less cluttered than version 6!"

Steinberg Cubase SX 3 Recording Software

cubase sx3
Cubase SX3 takes music production to a new level by adding more than 70 new features; including powerful Audio Warp realtime time stretching, an intuitive Play Order track, convenient in-place editing and many new editing functions. For the first time, a native music production system combines full-featured audio and MIDI recording and editing, virtual instruments and powerful audio mixing with the added flexibility of loop- and pattern-based arranging and mixing. Cubase SX3 supports Windows XP, Mac OSX, and works with a multitude of audio interfaces. With seamless integration of external audio and MIDI hardware, Cubase SX3 redefines virtual studio technology.

Features
Realtime Audio Warp --
A new realtime time stretching algorithm has been implemented to offer realtime tempo and pitch editing. Musical audio can now automatically follow a song's tempo and tempo changes. Individual parts can be transposed or tuned. ACID files can be imported directly into a project and instantly take-on the song's tempo. Complex tempo matching and audio quantizing tasks can now be done on the fly -- in realtime with instant audio feedback.

New Play Order track --
Adds a new track to define a song's formal structure and divide it into patterns. Patterns can be arranged in one or more play order. A new play order can then be flattened into a new linear timeline. The user is no longer tied into the linear structure of the timeline. Any existing arrangement can be divided into sections or patterns. This allows for vastly improved flexibility when experimenting with different song structures, arrangements or remixes. Instead of being tied into either linear or loop-based arranging, users can now work in both worlds at the same time.

In-place editing --
A click on the 'Edit Inplace' button opens a small key editor inside the project window for editing MIDI in context with other track types. Instead of working in multiple windows, MIDI events can now be edited directly from within the project window. This allows for faster editing and for editing MIDI in context with audio or video. A huge time-saver!

MIDI device maps/panels --
External MIDI devices can be created or imported from VST Mixer Maps. Editing external MIDI devices is now an integrated part of Cubase again. This allows for realtime control, automation and snapshot automation.

Workspaces --
Takes snapshots of a complete window setup and stores the entire desktop into a workspace. Key commands can then be used to switch between workspaces Organizing window layouts for single or multiple screens is a lot more powerful and easier to use. A major workflow improvement for every Cubase user.

Studio Connections total recall --
Works in conjunction with Yamaha's optional Studio Manager 2, which serves as a link between Cubase and external audio and MIDI hardware products that support the new Studio Connections standard. Studio Connections means perfect integration of hardware and software. Use the flexibility of plugins on external hardware devices. Loading a project can recall an entire studio's setup. Learn more about Studio Connections in the "Studio Connections Info" PDF file under "Resources."

External effects --

A new tab in the VST Connections window is used to set up external hardware signal processors as plugins to be used in the VST mixer. Instead of having to use outboard mixers, Cubase SX users can now run their audio tracks and virtual instruments though external signal processors using the VST mixer. Hardware effects can be used like plugins. An external plugin within a FX channel can be used as an external effects send.

Extended Freeze --

VST instrument freeze now has more options for freezing with or without insert effects. Audio channels now have a freeze button, too. In addition, overall performance of the freeze process has been improved. Freeze is now much more powerful, more efficient, saves more CPU, works faster, and offers more flexibility -- especially when working with many plugins and instruments.

Dummy plugin --
Replaces missing plugins when moving a project to a different system. Until now, it was difficult to move projects from one system to another; especially when plugins or VST instruments were missing. In SX3, a dummy plugin replaces missing plugins. This way, the project can still be opened and edited without losing the Connections to the original plugin when that project is sent back to the original system later.

Volume envelopes --

Part-based volume automation, similar to original Cubase VST dynamic events. Here's an additional way of controlling volume for a part. The pen tool can be used to draw volume curves on parts which will be locked to the part and move with the part. Great for fixing level problems right inside the part without the need of using track automation.

Color coding for tracks --

Tracks in the project window can now be color-coded. The same color is applied to respective mixer channels. This provides more clarity and better orientation; especially when working on complex projects with many tracks and mixer channels. When no colors are applied, the track color is copied to all parts within the track. However, if parts have been colorized before, these colors are retained.

Audition channel --
A separate audio output bus has been added to the VST Connections. This bus is used exclusively for previewing, editing and scrubbing audio. With a separate audition bus, audio can be monitored through separate monitors or through the same monitors but unprocessed, without having to reorganize the audio setup. This is especially useful when working in a multi-channel surround system or when working with multiple sets of studio monitors.

Audio pre-record of up to 10 minutes --
Records audio from the input of record-enabled tracks even before recording started. Never again will a great idea be lost when audio pre-record is active. Audio recorded prior to record start can be revealed by enlarging the part to the left. A great feature, both for recording and overdubbing.

Child busses for group/FX channels --

Provides a sub-category of extra group/FX busses linked to main output busses. In multi-channel applications, signals should often be routed to specific channels (front stereo, center mono, or surround stereo) bypassing the surround panners. This can be achieved by setting up child busses in the VST Connections window.

Alternative audio waveform visualization --

Displays audio waveforms in project window with background color modulation. The standard waveform display often lacks clarity when working at small track heights and low dynamics. Background color modulation displays waveform dynamics across the entire track height, thus providing better orientation in certain project views.

Improved hitpoint detection --

Offers better performance and more options. The hitpoint detection algorithm is now faster and more reliable. Presets for different audio material are provided. Hitpoints can be converted to audio warp tabs. Audio can be quantized on the fly. Overall, hitpoints and the new audio warp features integrate well and provide much deeper access to manipulating audio.

"Version 3 of Cubase SX maintains the visual style of its predecessor but includes a number of welcome changes, such as the ability to see the colour assigned to a track, viewing of the Sections for a VST Instrument Channel below the Sections in the Inspector for the corresponding MIDI track, and a smaller 'smallest' height for tracks." Complete Production Experience

Computer-based DAWs seem to have virtually no limitations—except those imposed by using a mouse to do the job of dedicated hardware. ProjectMix I/O finally puts all that tactile control back under your fingertips. It also combines that control with M-Audio’s acclaimed FireWire audio interface technology, eliminating clutter while integrating everything you need to transform your computer-based music system into a full-fledged digital audio workstation.

Total I/O
ProjectMix I/O gives you just about every kind of I/O you might need for a session -- and at the same price as many control surfaces lacking audio altogether. Eight analog input channels all feature 1/4 in. balanced and XLR microphone inputs with individual mic/line switches. Of course, phantom power is provided for up to eight condenser mics and input 1 even features a front-panel instrument input so you easily plug a guitar or bass right in. 8 x 8 ADAT Lightpipe I/O brings the simultaneous input total to 16 and allows you to expand your system with devices like M-Audio’s award winning Octane preamp. This allows for eight more channels of preamp via Lightpipe. 2 x 2 S/PDIF handles all your other digital connectivity, and word clock synchronizes ProjectMix with other digital devices.

ProjectMix I/O also serves as a 1 x 1 MIDI interface, allowing your computer to connect with MIDI hardware. Monitoring options include 2 x 1/4 in. headphone outputs with separate volume controls for working with a partner, as well as two stereo output pairs for routing to monitors, processors and mixdown devices. There’s even an A/B headphone source monitoring switch for cueing. ProjectMix I/O brings all of this to your computer with a single, simple FireWire connection.

Transport Control
Dedicated transport controls are another feature that makes doing sessions with ProjectMix I/O a breeze. You get illuminated controls for record, play, stop, fast forward, and rewind, plus a jog/shuttle wheel and locate buttons for easy project navigation. Sets of keys for in/out points, zoom, region nudge, looping and more will having your flying through sessions with incredible efficiency.

Easy to Use
M-Audio’s design team gave a great deal of consideration as to what features would provide the most value in an affordable package. They knew that cutting-edge features like high-resolution 10-bit touch-sensitive moving faders, large LCD display and mic/line switches on all channels were important. They also found that much of the expense of other units on the market owed to a dizzying number of controls that many users find daunting. Our engineers opted for a streamlined design that places some functions under the control of the keyboard and mouse, where they are best suited. The result is a controller that doesn’t have much of a learning curve, is much more intuitive to use and comes in at an unbeatable price. Check out ProjectMix I/O for yourself at your local M-Audio dealer. We think you’ll agree.

10-bit Touch-Sensitive Moving Faders
The motorized touch-sensitive faders on each of ProjectMix I/O’s 8 channel strips and master strip record and playback your changes, making for seamless mix automation. And touch sensitivity means that when you touch a fader in motion, it immediately disengages for manual control and re-engages automation when you release. This provides for both smoother operation and the elimination of motor burnout prevalent in older technologies. ProjectMix’s faders also feature higher resolution than other control surfaces in its price range.

Channel Strip
ProjectMix I/O’s 8 channel strips can map to as many channels as your project by simply pressing the bank +/- and channel +/- controls. Each channel strip features all of the functions you’d expect to help you zip through sessions, including buttons for mic/line, record enable, mute, solo, and select. In addition to a touch-sensitive motorized fader, each strip has an endless rotary encoder knob whose function is assigned by one of 15 dedicated buttons for EQ, aux send and more. Related information is displayed in the LCD window directly above each encoder. The encoders and LCD double to control assigned plug-in parameters as well.

Korg microKORG

The microKORG boasts the same dual-oscillator DSP synthesis engine found in Korg’s critically acclaimed MS2000 and offers a wider selection of waveforms than any other modeled synth. Oscillator 1 features a total of 71 waveforms . These include traditional analog waves like saw, pulse, sine and noise, plus more unique choices like Vox wave and cross wave. Together they provide a cool selection that can be modulated to produce an extensive range of timbres. In addition, 64 exclusive DWGS waveforms from Korg’s classic DW-8000 enable the microKORG to reproduce a broad collection of imitative sounds. Sounds like bells, electric pianos, guitars, basses and more that would be difficult reproduce on an analog synthesizer. You can also apply Ring and Sync modulation from Oscillator 2 to create the kind of complex timbres that are the true sign of an advanced synthesizer.

Four filter modes are available, offering -12 dB (2-pole) low pass, high pass and band pass configurations plus an extra steep -24 dB (4-pole) low pass setting. All include resonance. Two classic ADSR envelope generators and two MIDI-syncable LFOs provide the power to shape your sounds. Add a Virtual Patch matrix that lets you create advanced modulation settings – routing the Mod Wheel to control filter cutoff or pulse width, using an LFO to control panning or amp level, etc. – and you have performance that is unheard of from a synthesizer in this price range!

A full range of effects
Three types of modulation effects (chorus/flanger, phaser, ensemble), three types of delay effects (stereo, cross, L/R), and a two-band equalizer add the finishing touch to the microKORG. The delays can be synchronized with the arpeggiator or to an external MIDI clock – a great feature for live performances or for laying down tracks. All effects can be edited to create your own, unique sounds.

Classic vocoding
The microKORG includes an 8-band vocoder with many advanced features. You can capture and “freeze” the formants of your voice, and then play it across the keyboard, or shift the formant frequency to make your voice sound male, female, like a child or just plain wacky! Best of all, the microKORG comes with its own microphone so you can start having fun right away.

Great sounds and expression

Korg has used all of the microKorg’s synthesis power in the creation of 128 great-sounding presets. They cover a wide range of the latest musical styles plus many vintage favorites. Sixteen vocoder Programs are also included. The Pitch Bend wheel, Modulation wheel and five other knobs provide flexible realtime control over filter cutoff, attack, release and other important parameters. The Edit Mode allows you to fully edit the existing sounds, or to create your own new ones.

Flexible arpeggiator
Six types of arpeggio patterns (UP, DOWN, ALT1/2, Random, Trigger) are built in, with control over tempo, gate time, swing, and up to a 4-octave range. You can turn individual steps on or off within a pattern, providing the feel and functionality of a step sequencer.

Audio in
Two external audio input jacks are provided, so you can run other instruments, CDs and more through the microKORG’s filter and effects, allowing you to process sounds in truly creative ways.

A compact MIDI controller
The microKORG’s compact size is perfect for the musician or DJ looking to add a synth to his or her setup when space is tight. It’s also a great choice for use in a computer-based music setup. The five realtime knobs on the front panel can transmit MIDI messages (control changes), so they can be used as controllers for software synthesizers. Use the 37-note velocity-sensitive mini-keyboard for controlling other gear or for recording and editing with your sequencer. And thanks to battery-power, the microKORG is the ultimate portable controller when used with a laptop computer!

Melodyne 3 Studio Edition

melodyne studio edition
The Melodyne 3 Studio Edition software is the most powerful and accurate pitch correction software ever!!
Very high quality time stretching and pitch shifting . even for polyphonic and complex audio material
Far more reliable note recognition
Simpler arrangement editing
More powerful editing functions
Improvements in the layout and workflow

Opening a New Dimension in Audio Recording

Melodyne from Celemony Software is a program unlike anything you have seen or heard before! This unique and very powerful, albeit easy to use, software automatically detects the pitch of a monophonic audio file and then allows you to alter the tuning of individual notes…and more! Melodyne takes care of formant correction, which allows for extreme pitch shifting of more than an octave with no side effects. You can also change the phrasing of a note by adding or decreasing vibrato, making it possible to change the phrasing of a note. Phrasing can be altered further by changing the transition from one note to the next. Formant control allows a male voice to be changed to a female voice or even to change a trumpet into a trombone.

Mere words could never do justice to a program of this calibre! To this end we would strongly recommend that you visit the Celemony website for audio examples of what this ground breaking product is capable of: www.arbitermt.co.uk

You can freely move individual notes up or down and even time stretch/shrink notes to completely alter a performance. This could be compared to the MIDI key editor of a program such as Cubase, but in Melodyne you edit AUDIO, not MIDI. As Melodyne is a real time program you can make these changes on the fly and hear the results immediately. Melodyne will even export the note positions as a MIDI part allowing you to print notation from programs such as Cubase.

The Melodyne Studio Edition features 24 audio tracks and supports files up to 24 bit /96 kHz. Stereo files can be processed and up to 500 levels of undo/redo are available. Melodyne Studio Edition comes with a three site license, meaning it can be installed and used on three computers at a time!

The KONTROL49 – a 49-note full-sized USB/MIDI controller keyboard that is a combination of intuitive design, great feel, familiar hardware and detailed displays providing new musical dexterity when working with soft-synths, MIDI modules, or any digital audio workstation. It provides an amazing 40 different controllers including the new vector joystick, plus a full-size four-octave keyboard, all in a light, compact, and beautifully designed body. The KONTROL49 is a powerful and highly evolved controller for all your MIDI needs.

Four-octave full-size keyboard for uncompromising playability
The KONTROL49 has 49 full-sized and velocity sensitive keys; featuring the same touch and feel as Korg’s workstations and synthesizers. Full 128 key range is achieved using the octave shift buttons, and eight velocity curves let you tailor the response to your own playing, or to a specific application.

Above the keys, the pitch and mod wheels offer performance control that is comfortable and familiar , allowing you to control every nuance of high-quality software synthesizer instruments while enjoying superb playing feel and controllability.

An amazing 40 different controllers to stimulate your creativity
In addition to these performance-oriented controls and the sixteen velocity-sensitive trigger pads, the main panel of the KONTROL49 features eight assignable sliders and eight assignable rotary encoders. Each slider/encoder pair uses a backlit LCD to display their current functions. These eight “scribble strip” displays provide instant feedback with visual confirmation of the parameter name and value. Three level color-coding keeps controllers grouped together visually.

You can assign or create your own names for any function, and simply touching a controller will cause the display to switch to its current value. These names are displayed in the main LCD and sub displays. Even the main encoder can be used as a MIDI controller for selecting sounds, tempo control and more.

The two assignable switches can toggle two independent functions, or provide incremental up and down control to a single parameter .

Vector joystick for heightened expressive possibilities

The vector joystick allows you to assign separate control changes to the up/down and left/right (X and Y) axes. This lets you control two parameters simultaneously, making it the ideal way to take advantage of the KORG Legacy Collection WAVESTATION software synthesizer's Mix/Morphing function. Alternatively, you can assign the vector joystick to control two different parameters of an effect – such as the delay time (X-axis) and delay depth (Y-axis) of a delay effect – and enjoy direct control of multiple effect parameters, as on Korg's KAOSS PAD effect processor.

Sixteen velocity-sensitive trigger pads with great playability and multi-function control

Moving beyond tradition keyboard control, sixteen illuminated and velocity sensitive trigger pads are also provided. These pads can perform any MIDI function from triggering loops and samples, selecting sounds, toggling or switching parameters, sending SysEx strings, to acting as transport controls for your computer-based sequencer. The pads can also be used to select and change scenes. Each of the 12 internal scenes reconfigures all of the controllers with a single touch, and you can customize each scene to suit your own needs.

No other controller offers this unique combination of keys, pads, encoders, sliders and multiple displays.
Editor/Librarian software

Create, manage and save dozens of your own custom scenes and scene “sets” using the free Editor/Librarian software (Mac/PC) that comes with the KONTROL49. The clearly-organized settings window makes it easy to edit, assign, and customize your scenes. And of course, we provide ready-made scenes for the most popular music software titles , letting you integrate the KONTROL49 into your own system right away.

USB bus power support, enhanced MIDI interface functionality

In addition to a MIDI input and a pair of MIDI outputs, the back panel features a USB port, allowing direct connection to your computer. This arrangement enables the KONTROL49 to function as a USB/MIDI interface. While an AC adaptor is included, bus-power via the USB connector is also supported.
